Wive(-NG) Configuration

I wrote about Wive in the previous post. I'm going to write about the configuration in this one. But first I should tell you about Wive-NG which is the next generation firmware. I highly recommend upgrading to wive-ng. The upgrade can be done as I described it in the previous post (make sure to reset the device after that). The only difference is the default ip address which is set to: 10.200.200.249.

First you should connect to the router using ssh or any ssh client you like:

$ ssh root@10.200.200.249
root@10.200.200.249's password:
::Wive-NG-0.2.21::RTL8186-REALTIME::
Base station firmware version
Enter 'menu' for config router
Sun, 26 Apr 2009 18:41:28 +0700
[Wive-NG@/]#

Note!

The default password is rtl8186, don't forget to change it.

Running menu will show you the configuration menu:

-=General menu=-

1) Boot 2)Interfaces 3)General 4)WPA 5)Stat 6)Scan 7)RSSI 8)ExtendedMenu
9) Change password 10) WiFi reset 11)Save 12)Reboot 13)Quit

Enter choice number:

Enter a number and the related configuration file will be opened using vi. The configuration files are all documented using comments.

Important!

Don't forget to save the configuration by entering 11 or all the settings will be lost after reboot!

It's not possible to describe the configuration in detail here since there are many ways to configure the router which depends on how you're going to use it.

You should know about basic linux networking in order to be able to do the configuration. If you don't you can ask in any linux forums and/or irc channel related to networking. Wive-NG has a wiki but unfortunately it's in russian, you can use google translate ;-)

If you have any problems/questions related to configuration, feel free to ask here :-)

Hi, Siavashs. I found your blog when I'm searching any information about Wive. I have a Airlive WL-5460APv2. Do you know how I get Universal Mode with Wive-ng??? Many thanks.

Siavash SafiSiavash Safi, 2009/06/22 21:15

Hi Ranieri. I don't know what the universal mode is and I didn't find anything about it on the net but I may be able to help you if you tell me what it is and how you're going to use the device :-)

Excuse me for later. wl-5460ap's original firmware can to work on “universal repeater” mode. The AP receive signals from WISP and retransmit to other computers wirelessly. It works like Client + AP. I flash my wl-5460ap with Wive-ng but i don't know how to config it to work like repeater. Thanks.

Hi Siavashs,

I have a DLink G700AP myself. I downloaded the latest wive-ng firmware. It works fine as a bridge; The problem is that only a single computer can connect to the internet.

I tried a lot of different configurations but I can't make it work as a router (ie the eth0 is connected to a cable modem with dynamic ip) and the wlan0 as a dhcp server distributing IP's to my internet network.

Do you have any idea how to configure it?

Ah, looking forward to your new post on configuring wive-ng. I've been banging my head against a brick wall trying to get wive-ng to bridge my G700AP to my Linksys AP via WPA2 but for some reason it just refuses to connect as a client.

I can not connect to router in service mode.Which IP does it has? It is not 192.168.1.6!!!! I want to upload the original firmware from producer ot the hardware which is Canyon CN-WF514, but when I push the reset button for about 3 second during the power on, I can not find the address of the router???

erwinerwin, 2010/04/10 17:20

@lucky michael

your are using canyon cn-wf514 this is for DWL-700ap access point with rtl8186 chipset. try google what is the ip for that brand for firmware recovery..

Lucky MichaelLucky Michael, 2010/04/12 14:37

The people from the Canyon service can not find the IP for firmware recovery for this device. What could be wrong? I have only uploaded the firmware using the telnet. The device is working at the moment with the RTL8186 sw, but I want to revert back to the standard firmware.

Brinley AngBrinley Ang, 2010/05/30 15:51

@Lucky Michael

If you're sure your device uses RTL8186 chipset then resetting the device by holding on the reset for more than 5 secs should reset the IP. I noticed that in that mode, 192.168.1.6 is not pingable but if you tftp the firmware to it as per the fw_upload.sh script packaged with wive-ng, it will upload the firmware successfully. Wait another 5 secs and it should boot up with ip address of 10.200.200.249 unless you have changed the ip from before

LuckyMLuckyM, 2010/05/30 16:22

Let me clear the situation: My device is Canyon CN-WF514. The chip is really RTL8186 and I have installed the wive-ng firmware on it. Now I want to revert back to original FW from Canyon. The engineers from the service can not revert it back, because they can not access the device after resetting by holding the reset for more than 5 secs.DO you say, that even that the device is not accessible, I should try to use tftp to uplaod the Canyon fw to the device?

Great post!!!

Thanks!!! I was about to get crazy with my wifi box before reading your post :)

I was wondering how to configure my DWL-G700AP in such a way that has dhcp-client on eth0 and dhcp-server on wlan. I'd basically like to setup a router…

Thanks!

Mark
